Huirui was a native of Jizhou. He left home in his youth. His integrity was pure and lofty. Widely learned, he traveled widely, journeying through various states until he reached the borders of South India. In phonology, translation, exegesis, and the different meanings across diverse regions, there was nothing he did not thoroughly comprehend. He returned to rest at Lushan, joining Master Yuan's Pure Society. He often went to the capital, staying at Wuyi Temple. His lectures and expositions all penetrated beyond the words. Prince Yikang of Pengcheng of the Song invited him to enter his mansion to administer the precepts. Huirui said, "According to the Rites, I have heard of students coming to learn, [not of teachers going to teach]." Yikang was deeply ashamed, so he entered the temple, performed reverent obeisance, and received the precept rules. Later, he presented Huirui with a marten robe. Huirui would not wear it, but habitually sat upon it. The prince secretly ordered his attendants to buy it back for three hundred thousand cash. Huirui said, "Although it is not something I wear, it was bestowed by the great prince, so I simply make use of it accordingly." Xie Lingyun was deeply fond of Buddhist principles and thoroughly understood the sounds of diverse lands. He consulted Huirui to verify various characters and sounds found in the sūtras, composing the *Explanations of the Fourteen Sounds* and setting forth rules and examples. Sanskrit and Chinese thus became distinctly intelligible, giving the script an authoritative basis. In the sixteenth year of the Yuanjia reign-period of the Song, a yimao year (439 CE), he passed away in peace at the age of eighty-five. At the time, people said that the Jin had four sages, and [Dao]sheng, [Seng]zhao, [Seng]rong, and [Hui]rui were they.
