嚴以宋元嘉二十年卒于東安寺，春秋八十有一矣。帝詔曰：「嚴法師器識淵遠，學道之匠，奄爾遷神，痛悼于懷。可給錢五萬，布五十匹。」

Yan died in the twentieth year of the Yuanjia era of the Song at Dong'an Temple, at the age of eighty-one. The Emperor issued an edict saying: "Master Yan's capacity and insight were profound and far-reaching; he was a master of the study of the Way. His sudden passing brings grief and mourning to our heart. Let fifty thousand cash and fifty bolts of cloth be bestowed."
