嚴弟子法智，幼有神理。年二十四往江陵，值雅公講，便論議數番，雅厝通無地。雅顧眄四眾曰：「小子斐然成章。」智笑曰：「迺變風變雅作矣。」於是聲布楚郢，譽洽京、吳。善《成實》及大小《品》。

Yan's disciple Fazhi possessed extraordinary intelligence from his youth. At the age of twenty-four, he went to Jiangling and happened upon Master Ya giving a lecture; he engaged in several rounds of debate with him, leaving Ya with nowhere to find an explanation. Ya looked around at the fourfold assembly and said: "This young fellow has splendid literary talent!" Zhi smiled and said: "And so the 'Altered Feng' and 'Altered Ya' were composed!" Thereupon his renown spread throughout Chu and Ying, and his praise reached the Capital and Wu. He was skilled in the Tattvasiddhi-śāstra and the larger and smaller Prajñāpāramitā-sūtras.
