Shi Huiguan, whose secular surname was Cui, was a native of Qinghe. At the age of ten, he was already famed for his broad knowledge. He went forth from home in his youth and travelled about to receive instruction; later he went to Mount Lu, where he also sought instruction from Huiyuan. Hearing that Master [Kumāra]jīva had entered the Pass, he went from the south to the north, inquiring into and verifying agreements and differences, and thoroughly distinguishing between the new and old [translations]. His spiritual bearing was refined and elegant, and his thoughts penetrated the dark and subtle. Contemporaries praised him, saying: "For penetrating understanding, [Dao]sheng and [Seng]rong are foremost; for precise disputation, [Hui]guan and [Seng]zhao are first." He then composed the "Fahua zongyao xu" (Preface to the Essentials of the Lotus Sūtra) to present to [Kumāra]jīva. Jīva said: "Good man, what you have argued is most delightful. After a short while, you should travel south between the Changjiang and Han Rivers, and make skillful propagation your endeavor."
