Shi Sengjing, surnamed Jiao, was originally from Longxi and later moved his residence to the region of Wu. His filial piety surpassed that of ordinary men, and he took light account of wealth, being fond of giving. His family was poor, and when his mother died, the commandery governor bestowed five thousand cash upon him, but he earnestly declined and would not accept it. He then carried the earth himself, planted pines and cypresses, built a hut at the gravesite, and wept tears of blood for three years. After his mourning period ended, he left household life and dwelt at Mount Hua in Wu County. Later he entered the Pass and Long areas to seek teachers and receive the Dharma, returning only after several years. He stopped at the capital and broadly expounded the sūtras and treatises. Xu Zhanzhi of Donghai, the Minister of Works, respected his pure demeanor and invited him to be the preceptor for his entire household.
