After he had lived there for about a year, he suddenly heard the sounds of men, horses, drums, and horns. Presently, he saw a person holding a name slip who announced himself to Fadu as "Jin Shang." Fadu went forward to receive him. Shang had a very elegant appearance and was accompanied by an impressive retinue of guards. After paying homage, he said, "I, your disciple, have ruled this mountain as king for over seven hundred years. The divine realm has its laws, and no creature may trespass. Those who previously sought lodge here were perhaps not authentic and upright, so illnesses and deaths followed in succession; yet that was also their fate. The Dharma Master's virtue and morality are where people turn; I reverently give up this place to offer it to you, and I also wish to receive the five precepts to bind an affinity for future lives forever." Fadu said, "The realms of humans and spirits are different; there is no need to trouble yourself so. Moreover, you, dānapati, receive blood sacrifices generation after generation, which is strictly prohibited by the five precepts." Shang said, "If I can be accepted among your disciples, I will immediately renounce killing." Thereupon he took his leave and departed. The next morning, Fadu saw a person delivering ten thousand coins, along with incense, candles, and a knife, with a note saying: "Offered by disciple Jin Shang." On the fifteenth day of the month, Fadu held an assembly for him. Shang came again, bowed in worship alongside the assembly, circumambulated, received the precepts, and departed.
