Fotiao would sometimes enter the mountains alone for half a year or a whole year, carrying a few sheng of dried cooked rice, and when he returned there was always some left. Someone once followed Fotiao walking through the mountains for several tens of li. At dusk heavy snow fell, and Fotiao entered a stone cave—a tiger's lair—to lodge. When the tiger returned, it lay down together [with him] in front of the cave. Fotiao said to the tiger, 'I have taken your place; how shameful is that?' The tiger then flattened its ears and went down the mountain. The follower was terrified. Later, Fotiao set the date of his own passing, and people from near and far all arrived. He spoke to them all, saying, 'Heaven and earth endure long, yet they still collapse and decay; how much less can humans and things seek to exist forever? If you can wash away the three defilements and concentrate your minds on true purity, even though bodily numbers diverge, we will surely share the same accord.' The assembly all wept and earnestly pleaded with him [to stay]. Fotiao said, 'Life and death are destiny; how can one plead against them?' Fotiao then returned to his room, sat upright, covered his head with his robe, and suddenly passed away.
