9.52

後數年，調白衣弟子八人入西山伐木，忽見調在高巖上，衣服鮮明，姿儀暢悅，皆驚喜作禮：「和上尚在耶？」調曰：「吾常在耳。」具問知舊可否，良久乃去。八人便捨事還家，向諸同法者說。眾無以驗之，共發塚開棺，不復見屍，唯衣履在焉。

Several years later, eight lay disciples of Fotiao went into the western mountains to cut wood. Suddenly they saw Fotiao on a high cliff, his robes fresh and bright, his appearance cheerful and radiant. In pleasant surprise they made prostrations, saying, 'Is the Upādhyāya still here?' Fotiao said, 'I am always here.' He inquired in detail about whether old acquaintances were well, and only after a long while did he depart. The eight men abandoned their work and returned home to tell their fellow practitioners. As the assembly had no way to verify it, they together dug up the mound and opened the coffin, but did not find the corpse; only his clothes and shoes remained.
