Moreover, while [Buddhabhadra] was in Chang'an, he greatly promoted the practice of dhyāna. Those from all directions who took pleasure in stillness heard of his renown and arrived. But their immersion in study varied in depth, and their attainment of the Dharma had degrees of richness and shallowness; frivolous and hypocritical individuals took advantage of this to be deceitful. There was a disciple who, based on a minor contemplative practice, claimed to have attained the fruit of ananāgāmin. [Buddhabhadra] did not immediately examine and question him, which led to circulating rumors. He was greatly slandered, and an unforeseen disaster was about to befall him. Thereupon his followers either concealed their names and slipped away in secret, or scaled walls and fled by night. Within half a day, the assembly was almost entirely dispersed, yet [Buddhabhadra] remained calm and untroubled.
