At that time, the senior monks Senglüe, Daoheng, and others said to [Buddhabhadra], "The Buddha did not even allow speaking of the dharmas one has attained oneself. Earlier you said that five ships were about to arrive, which was empty and without truth. Furthermore, your disciples deceive and delude, creating dissension among themselves. Since this violates the Vinaya, it is unreasonable for us to abide together. You should leave promptly and not remain." [Buddhabhadra] said, "My body is like floating duckweed; leaving or staying is very easy. I only regret that what I cherish in my heart has not been expressed, which brings me sorrow." Thereupon, together with more than forty people including his disciple Huiguan, he set out. His composure was leisurely, showing no sign of distress from the start. Those who recognized the truth all lamented, and more than a thousand people, both monastics and laity, saw him off. When Yao Xing heard of his departure, he felt regret and said to Daoheng, "The śramaṇa Buddhabhadra came travelling with the Dharma, wishing to proclaim the bequeathed teachings. Before his words were spoken, he was silenced, which is truly deeply regrettable. How could we, for the fault of a single word, leave ten thousand men without a guide?" He therefore issued an order to pursue him. [Buddhabhadra] replied to the envoy, "I truly know the imperial kindness, but I cannot comply with the command." Thereupon he led his companions on a night march, heading south toward Mount Lu.
