While in foreign lands, Baoyun thoroughly studied Indic writing. He comprehensively understood the phonetics, scripts, glosses, and meanings of the various countries of Tianzhu. Later, returning to Chang'an, he followed the dhyāna master Buddhabhadra in practicing dhyāna and progressing in the Way. Shortly thereafter, the dhyāna master was unjustly expelled by the monks of Qin, and his disciples all shared in the blame; Baoyun also fled and scattered. It happened that Shi Huiyuan of Mount Lu mediated the expulsion affair, and they returned together to the capital, settling at Daochang Temple. Because Baoyun's resolve and strength were steadfast and vigorous, and he had propagated the Way in remote realms, none among the saṃgha failed to open their hearts to consult him, honoring and loving him. Baoyun translated the *New Sūtra of Immeasurable Life* (*Xin Wuliangshou jing*); many of the sūtras translated in later years were revised and finalized by Baoyun. Fluent in both Chinese and foreign languages, his phonetics and semantic glosses were precise and correct, and all trusted and accepted what Baoyun established. Formerly, the śramaṇa Zhu Fonian of Guanzhong was skilled in reciting and translating, brilliantly producing numerous sūtras during the two dynasties of Fu [Jian] and Yao [Xing]. In translating from Indic languages east of the Yangzi, none surpassed Baoyun; thus, when propagating the treasury of the Dharma during the Jin and Song periods, the śramaṇa Huiguan and others all befriended and praised him.
