By nature, Baoyun was fond of secluded dwelling to maintain tranquility and quietude; he thus went to the mountain monastery of Liuhe and translated the *Buddhacarita-kāvya-sūtra* (*Fo benxing zan jing*). The mountains had many displaced folk whose custom favored petty banditry; Baoyun preached the Dharma to instruct and guide them, and many reformed themselves, eight out of ten households practicing rites and making offerings. Shortly afterward, Huiguan of Daochang Temple, on the verge of death, invited Baoyun to return to the capital to take charge of the monastery's affairs, and Baoyun had no choice but to return. After dwelling at Daochang for about a year, he returned again to Liuhe. In the twenty-sixth year of the Yuanjia era, he passed away at the mountain monastery at the age of seventy-four. His travels in foreign countries are recorded in a separate biography.
