Huiyong strictly practiced austerities, vowing to be born in the Western Land. In the tenth year of the Yixi era of the Jin (414 CE), he contracted a lingering and severe illness; yet he was singularly meticulous regarding the precepts, holding his resolve ever more diligently. Although lying ill and enduring suffering, his countenance was cheerful and pleased. Shortly before his end, he suddenly gathered his robes and joined his palms, asking for his sandals and wishing to get up, as if he saw something. The assembly asked in astonishment, and he replied: 'The Buddha has come.' As his words ended, he passed away at the age of eighty-three. Both monastics and laity on the mountain smelled an extraordinary fragrance, which dissipated only after seven days.
