Once, Tanguo dreamed that a mountain spirit requested to receive the five precepts. Tanguo said, "My teacher is here; you may go ask to receive them from him." A short time later, Tanyong saw a man wearing an unlined robe and cap, elegant and dignified in appearance, accompanied by about twenty attendants, who requested to receive the five precepts. Because of Tanguo's earlier dream, Tanyong knew this was the mountain spirit, so he expounded the Dharma and conferred the precepts upon him. The spirit offered foreign spoons and chopsticks as a gift, bowed, took leave, and suddenly vanished. On the day Huiyuan was on the verge of death, Tanyong rushed there wailing and leaping, his grief as deep as for a close kin. Later he went to Jingzhou and died at Zhulin Monastery.
