In the ninth year of the Jianyuan era of the illegitimate Qin, the Qin general Fu Pi invaded Xiangyang. Dao'an was detained by Zhu Xu and could not leave, so he dispersed his disciples, having each go where they wished. As they took to the road, the senior and virtuous ones all received admonitions and instructions, but Yuan did not receive a single word. Yuan then knelt and said: 'I alone have received no instruction or encouragement; I fear I do not measure up to the rest.' Dao'an said: 'Regarding a man like you, how could I have any worries?' Yuan thereupon set off south to Jingzhou with several dozen disciples and stayed at Shangming Temple. Later, he wished to go to Mount Luofu; when he arrived in Xunyang, seeing that Mount Lu was serene and pure, well suited for resting the mind, he began by residing at the Longquan Hermitage.
