Shi Tanying was said by some to be a northerner, though his commandery and county are unknown. By nature quiet and tranquil, he did not socialize much, but was content with poverty and devoted to study. His deportment was deliberate, appearing exceedingly slow, yet his mental spirit was swift and agile, his mind contrary to his outward form. He was capable of lecturing on the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra and the Guangzan bore, and whenever he turned the wheel of the Dharma, monastics and laypeople gathered by the thousands.
