Later he entered Guanzhong, where Yao Xing received him with great courtesy. When Kumārajīva arrived in Chang'an, Tanying went to follow him. Kumārajīva said to Yao Xing, "Yesterday I met Master Ying; he is also a monk of distinguished renown and exemplary style in this country." Yao Xing ordered him to reside in the Xiaoyao Garden to assist Kumārajīva in translating sūtras. When the Tattvasiddhi-śāstra was first translated, all debates and questions were exchanged sequentially; Tanying deplored its disjointed nature and condensed it into five sections, which he presented to Kumārajīva. Kumārajīva said, "Excellent! This thoroughly accords with my intent." When Kumārajīva later translated the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra, because Tanying had previously taken it as his core teaching, he gave it especially deep consideration, composing a four-fascicle Commentary on the Meaning of the Lotus Sūtra and annotating the Madhyamaka-śāstra. Later he lived as a hermit in the mountains, maintaining his discipline beyond the dust of the world, cultivating merit and establishing good deeds with ever greater devotion as he grew older. He died during the Yixi reign of the Jin dynasty at the age of seventy.
