In the sūtras translated by Kumārajīva, Sengrui took part in their collation and emendation. Formerly, the 'Receipt of Prophecy' chapter in Dharmarakṣa's translation of the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra stated, 'Devas see humans; humans see devas.' When Kumārajīva came to this point during his translation, he remarked, 'This statement agrees with the meaning of the Western Regions, but its phrasing is overly plain.' Sengrui said, 'Could it perhaps mean: "Devas and humans interact, and both are able to see one another"?' Kumārajīva said with delight, 'Indeed it is so!' Sengrui's comprehension and discernment were all of this kind. Later, when the Tattvasiddhi-śāstra was translated, [Kumārajīva] had Sengrui lecture upon it. Kumārajīva said to Sengrui, 'In this debate treatise, there are seven places where the text refutes the Abhidharma, but the phrasing is somewhat concealed. If one can understand it without asking, one may truly be called an exceptional talent.' When Sengrui came to elucidate its subtle mysteries, he indeed did not consult Kumārajīva, yet his understanding coincided tacitly and completely. Kumārajīva sighed and said, 'In transmitting and translating sūtras and treatises, having encountered you, I truly have no regrets!' [Sengrui] composed prefaces to the Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa, the Dvādaśanikāya-śāstra, the Mūlamadhyamakakārikā, and other works; he also composed prefaces to the Larger and Smaller Prajñāpāramitā-sūtras, the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka-sūtra, the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa-sūtra, the Viśeṣacintābrahma-paripṛcchā-sūtra, the Sarvabuddhaviṣayāvatāra-samādhi-sūtra, and other scriptures, all of which circulate in the world.
