Earlier, Sengrui had maintained his monastic deportment with discipline and broadly propagated the scriptural teachings, constantly dedicating these various wholesome karmas with the vow to be reborn in the Land of Peace and Nurture (Sukhāvatī). In walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, he never dared turn his back directly to the west. Later, knowing that his life was coming to an end, he suddenly gathered the monks to take his leave, saying to the assembly, 'My lifelong vow has been to be reborn in the west; from what I have seen, I may perhaps attain rebirth there, yet I do not know for certain whether I have avoided falling short, and doubts remain as to whether it will come to pass. If my bodily, verbal, or mental karmas have caused offence toward any of you, I pray you will bestow great compassion upon me and remain my companions in the Dharma for eternal kalpas.' Thereupon he entered his room, bathed, burned incense, and bowed in reverence. Returning to his couch, he faced the west, joined his palms, and passed away. On that day, all throughout the monastery saw five-coloured fragrant smoke emerging from Sengrui's room. He was sixty-seven years of age.
