Shi Daoyuan, whose surname was Kou, was of unknown origin. He left home and resided at Dong'an Temple in the capital. In his youth he maintained the discipline of the vinaya, and as he grew up he studied doctrinal tenets; there were no scriptures or treatises on enumeration (Abhidharma) that he did not master. Yet he concealed his brilliance and hid his virtue, so that the world did not know of him. Later he began to lecture at Dong'an Temple, analyzing the profound subtleties and thoroughly plumbing the hidden obscurities, causing long-accumulated blockages to melt away like ice. Thereupon the students changed their view of him and gathered to adhere to his virtue. Later he moved to Pengcheng Temple. Emperor Wen of Song, regarding Daoyuan's conduct as a model for all beings, decreed that he reside at that temple. Later he died at his residence at the age of seventy-eight.
