Shi Tandi, whose secular surname was Kang, had ancestors from Kangju. During the reign of Emperor Ling of the Han dynasty, they moved and affiliated themselves with the Central Realm; amid the turmoil at the end of the reign of Emperor Xian, they moved to reside in Wuxing. Tandi's father, Rong, once served as Attendant Officer of Jizhou. His mother, Lady Huang, was taking a midday nap and dreamed of a monk addressing her as 'mother', who entrusted her with a fly-whisk (cāmara) and two iron-carved paperweights. Upon waking, she saw that both items were present; she subsequently conceived and gave birth to Tandi. When Tandi was five years old, his mother showed him the fly-whisk and the other item. Tandi said, "A gift from the King of Qin." The mother asked, "Where did you put it?" He replied, "I do not recall."
