When he was ten years old, he underwent pravrajyā; in his study he did not follow a master, but his awakening arose naturally. Later, accompanying his father to Fan and Deng, he happened to meet the monk Chaodao from the Guanzhong region and suddenly called out Chao's name. Chao said, "Why does a young boy call out the name of an elder?" Tandi said, "Just now, I suddenly blurted out 'Upādhyāya!' It was when I, the novice Tandi, was gathering vegetables for the saṃgha and was injured by a wild boar; I inadvertently cried out, that is all." Chao had previously been a disciple of Dharma Master Hongjue and, while gathering vegetables for the saṃgha, had indeed been injured by a wild boar. Chao did not remember this at first, so he went to Tandi's father. Tandi's father recounted the circumstances in full and showed him the paperweights, fly-whisk, and other objects. Chao then realized and wept, saying, "He is indeed my late teacher, Dharma Master Hongjue. My teacher once lectured on the Lotus Sūtra for Yao Chang, and I served as the chief respondent (dujiang); Yao Chang gifted my teacher two items, and now they are actually here!" Calculating back to when Hongjue relinquished his life, it was precisely the day the items were entrusted. Chao also remembered the matter of gathering vegetables, and his sorrow and reverence deepened all the more.
