Earlier, Sengzhao in Guanzhong had first annotated the Vimalakīrti[-nirdeśa-sūtra], which the world entirely appreciated. [Daosheng] further brought out its deep import, making clear and expressing novel [insights] as well as commentaries on various scriptures, all of which the world treasured. Wang Wei compared [Dao]sheng to Guo Linzong and composed a biography for him to make known his posthumous virtue. People of the time considered [Dao]sheng's inference that icchantikas could attain Buddhahood to be grounded in authority; his [doctrines of] sudden enlightenment and not experiencing retribution were also taken as standard models in their time. Emperor Taizu of the Song once expounded [Dao]sheng's doctrine of sudden enlightenment, and the śramaṇa Sengbi and others all raised formidable objections. The Emperor said: "If the deceased could be brought back to life, would he ever be refuted by you gentlemen?"
