Shi Fadu was a native of Huanglong. He went forth from household life in his youth, travelled and studied in the northern lands, and comprehensively mastered various scriptures, exclusively achieving his purpose through rigorous discipline. Toward the end of the Song dynasty he travelled to the capital. The eminent scholar Ming Sengshao of Qi Commandery, who had detached himself from worldly affairs and lived in seclusion at Mount She in Langye, admired Fadu's pure conduct and treated him with the respect due to a teacher and friend. When [Sengshao] died, he gave up his mountain residence to serve as the Qixia Hermitage, inviting Fadu to live there. Previously, a Daoist master had wished to use the grounds of the temple for a Daoist abbey, but anyone who stayed there died; even when it was later turned into a Buddhist temple, it was still plagued by terrifying disturbances. From the moment Fadu took up residence there, all strange spectres subsided.
