Shi Daohui was surnamed Wang, a native of Yuyao, residing in Jianye. At the age of eleven he left household life as a disciple of Sengyuan, staying at Lingyao Temple. When he reached fourteen, he read the *Collected Works of Huiyuan* of Mount Lu; thereupon he sighed deeply with regret that he had been born too late, and consequently journeyed upstream a thousand li with his friend Zhishun to observe the traces left by Huiyuan. He then rested at the West Temple of Mount Lu, and after three years had passed, he returned to the capital. At that time Wang Huo was debating the meaning of the 'three characteristics' and held a great gathering of doctrinal monks. Daohui was seventeen years old at the time and posed several rounds of questions; his speech was profound and subtle, and his textual citations were well ordered. The assembly all marveled at him.
