Later he studied under the two Dharma Masters Daomeng and Sengbin. Daomeng was once lecturing on the Tattvasiddhi-śāstra. Zhang Rong constructed successive difficult challenges. Daomeng claimed illness and pleaded an inability to deal with so many arguments, so he instructed Daohui to respond to him. Because of Daohui's youth, Rong harbored some disdain. Seizing the opportunity, Daohui blunted his sharpness, his words consistently reaching ultimate principle; in the exchanges back and forth, he had ample leeway. He was skilled in the Mahāyāna, clear on the counting-treatises, and lectured continuously, his disciples being extremely numerous. In differentiating categories of doctrinal meaning, he was the first to establish chapters and sections. Chu Cheng and Xie Chaozong, both men of great renown at the time, regarded him with high esteem and deference.
