Shi Baoliang was originally of the Xu clan, his ancestors being from a prominent lineage in Dongwan. Upon the collapse of the Jin, they fled to Jinxian in Donglai. At the age of twelve Liang left the household, taking Dharma Master Daoming of Qingzhou as his teacher. Ming was also a monk of doctrinal learning, famed in his generation. Liang applied himself to his studies with focused dedication, never losing a word of what he heard once. When he reached full ordination, he wished to travel widely and spread the teachings. Yet reflecting that his training had its source [in his master], he could not bring himself to cut ties and depart. Ming said to him: "A śramaṇa renounces the world taking propagation and comprehension as the principle. How could you be constrained by this web of affection and keep our Way from traveling east?" Liang was awakened by this, and accordingly traveled abroad as a sojourner.
