Jīvaka was a native of Tianzhu. He traveled throughout China and the frontier regions without a fixed dwelling; he was unrestrained and miraculous, following his nature and neglecting worldly conventions, and his conduct was not constant, so that people of the time could not fathom him. From when he set out from Tianzhu until he reached Funan, traversing various coasts down to Jiao and Guang, he performed spiritual wonders everywhere. Having arrived in Xiangyang, he wished to take a boat across the river. The boatman saw that the Indian śramaṇa's robes were ragged and shabby, and dismissed him without taking him aboard. When the boat reached the northern bank, Jīvaka had already crossed. Walking ahead, he encountered two tigers; the tigers flattened their ears and wagged their tails, and Jīvaka rubbed their heads with his hand, whereupon the tigers left the path and went away. Those who saw this on both banks followed him in crowds.
