At the end of the reign of Emperor Hui of the Jin, he arrived in Luoyang. All the monks paid homage to him; Jīvaka knelt in the barbarian posture, calm and composed, his expression unchanged. At times he would tell people about their previous lifetimes, saying that Zhi Fayuan came from among cattle, and Zhu Faxing came from among humans. He also criticized the assembly of monks, saying that their robes were ornate and did not conform to the simple Dharma. Seeing the palace walls of Luoyang, he said, 'It vaguely resembles the palace of Trāyastriṃśa Heaven, but the natural and the man-made are different.' Jīvaka said to the śramaṇa Qijiemi, 'The artisan who built this palace came from Trāyastriṃśa Heaven; once it was completed, he returned to heaven. Beneath the tiles of the roof ridge, there should be one thousand five hundred work tools.' At the time, everyone said that they had previously heard this artisan indeed placed his work tools beneath the tiles. It was also said that after the palace was completed, he was soon killed.
