When Emperor Zhongzong reached the yisi year, the first year of the Shenlong era [705], Yijing translated the Peacock King Sūtra at the Inner Bodhimaṇḍa of the eastern capital Luoyang. Furthermore, at the Great Fuxian Temple he produced four works: the Sūtra of Deva-putra Prasenajit, the Incantation of King of Fragrance Bodhisattva, and the Sūtra of the King of All Adornments. The śramaṇa Pāṇḍu read the Sanskrit text; the śramaṇa Xuanzan recorded the translation; the śramaṇa Dayi checked the text; the śramaṇas Shengzhuang and Lizhen verified the doctrinal meaning; Vice Minister of War Cui Shi and Supervising Secretary Lu Can polished the prose and corrected the characters; and Yang Shenjiao, Director of the Palace Library and Prince Consort Commandant, supervised the undertaking. The Emperor deeply revered the Buddhist scriptures and, drawing especially upon his imperial intellect, composed the Great Tang Preface to the Holy Teachings of the Tripiṭaka Commemorating the Dragon's Rise. He also went in person to the Western Gate of Luoyang to announce and display the newly translated scriptures to the assembled officials.
