The appraisal says: The paths of spirits and immortals are different; how could their discourses be the same? In explanation, it is said: "In the past, the Realized Man of Xiaoyou could discuss the principle of emptiness, and the spirits and immortals of Mount Fangzhu who built stupas faithfully revered the Buddha's path, only refraining from shaving their hair and dyeing their robes, and were termed 'lay bodhisattvas.' Furthermore, the various ṛṣis of the Snow Mountains who were skilled in the treatises on the five sciences and sought deliverance were likewise of this sort. However, their resembling paths must be carefully distinguished. As with the five subtle elements (tanmātra) and the five great elements (mahābhūta) among the twenty-five principles in the Western Regions, their names are identical to Buddhist dharmas. Yet what they postulate is as far apart as heaven and earth; truly they are difficult to differentiate!"
