Shi Anonymous was a person of unknown origin. He lived several tens of li west of Baocheng on what is called Middle Mount Liang—where several peaks encircle and lean against one another, their azure greenery congealed in the sky, and he dwelled in their midst. His conduct was consistently erratic and his speech unusual; those who saw him constantly were not alarmed, but those who newly approached him found him bizarre. Usually he was passionately fond of wine and ate meat, openly engaging in coarse and heavy actions. Yet he managed the various affairs of the community and was often balanced and fair, so the monks also feared him and called him the Sthavira. At the time, the monastic assembly all imitated his behavior, but only he had no fear. The Sthavira perceived this, sighed, and said, "Before abiding in the pure mind-ground, how dare one practice transgressive conduct? Transgressive conduct is not a realm for ordinary people. Moreover, the worldly saying goes, 'Gold is tested with fire'—wait until one day, at one moment, I test it." During the Kaicheng era, he suddenly made a huge pancake, summoned his followers, and said, "I shall go with you all to visit the Śītavana." Because the mountain wilderness outside the city had many graves and burial mounds where people discarded corpses, he spoke thus. The Sthavira squatted on the ground, spread out the pancake, wrapped a decaying corpse in it, and stuffed it into his mouth and ate it; his brisk and hearty demeanor was quite remarkable. The monks traveling with him all covered their noses, spat on the ground, and ran away. The Sthavira shouted loudly, "Only when you can feed on this meat may you feed on other meat!" From this, the monastic followers were startled into awakening and transformed into practitioners of painstaking austerity. People near and far took refuge in faith. At that time, Vice Director of the Right Liu Zhongying was serving in Liang Prefecture and went in person to pay him reverence. When he died, it was said that his age was about eighty or ninety. His true portrait remains in the mountain temple. To this day, between Liang, Yi, and the Three Capital Regions, they simply call him the Xingyuan Sthavira. His wondrous traces and strange deeds were not few, but have not been fully detailed.
