Śramaṇa Jingchao: it is not known where he was from. He upheld the precepts as carefully as guarding a buoyant float. By nature he was straight as an arrow, never flattering in speech. When he traveled afar on foot seeking an exceptional place to dwell, upon reaching Mount Lu he resolved to cease his wandering. He recited only the Lotus Sūtra, making it his constant practice. The people of Jiujiang looked up to him with great reverence. He once paid homage to the Avataṃsaka-sūtra, bowing once for every character, and having completed this twice, he burned one finger as a lamp offering to celebrate the completion of paying homage to the sūtra. Next, he paid homage to the Lotus Sūtra in the same manner. From within his skin, śarīra faintly emerged—abundant, round, and luminous; if anyone sought them, whether on his sitting mat or walking on the ground, they were gathered without count. He passed away in his hermitage during the Tianfu era. Today his tomb stūpa is on Mount Lu; visitors pay their respects and can only sigh in admiration.
