The appraisal says: Those who speak of renouncing the body mean that one must discard the whole body, as did Prince Sattva. Now, taking a finger as a lamp or bearing a torch upon an arm—how can this belong to such a category? Is it not an exaggeration? In general, it is said: 'Burning a finger or severing an arm is the preparatory practice (prayoga) for renouncing the body. Moreover, in the semblance and final ages, it is an especially difficult undertaking. It is just like maintaining a partial degree of integrity and being placed alongside upright officials in their biographies.'
