Shi Xiongjun, secular surname Zhou, was a native of Chengdu. He was skilled at preaching but lacked moral conduct; the alms he received from donors were used unlawfully; moreover, he was deceitful and cared only for uninhibited license. Later he returned to lay clothes and joined the military ranks; then, fleeing hardship, he returned to the black-robed order. During the Dali era, he died suddenly and entered the underworld. When he met King Yama and the reprimands were concluded, he was being led away to hell when Jun raised his voice and shouted loudly: "If Xiongjun falls into hell, the Buddhas of the three periods of time will have spoken falsely! I once read the Contemplation Sūtra: even those of the lowest tier of the lowest grade who commit the five heinous transgressions, upon reciting the Buddha's name ten times at death, can still attain rebirth. Although Jun has committed sins, he did not commit the five heinous transgressions; and as for reciting the Buddha's name, none knows how many times I have done so. If the words of the Buddha are to be trusted, I who died suddenly should be allowed to return!" He sent a message, saying: "If you see the monastics and laypeople in the city, tell them that I have already attained rebirth in the Western Direction." Having spoken these words, he mounted a jeweled dais and departed straight for the west.
