27.15

釋寂然，姓白氏，不知何許人也。名節素奇，踵四聖種，故號頭陀焉。大和二年，振錫觀方，訪天台勝境到剡。

The śramaṇa Jiran, whose secular surname was Bai, was of unknown origin. His moral integrity was remarkably singular from the first, and he followed in the footsteps of the four noble lineages, hence he was called an ascetic (dhūta). In the second year of the Dahe era, shaking his staff to view the regions, he visited the scenic sites of Tiantai and arrived in Shan.
