Seeing that the scenery here was extraordinary and hearing that many renowned gentlemen had resided here, Jiran felt as though he had returned to his old hometown; enamored, he could not bring himself to leave. As he put the transformation through the Way into practice, dhyāna disciples gathered in great numbers. When Yuan Zhen, Chancellor and Surveillance Commissioner of Zhedong, heard of this, he first divined and constructed a dwelling for him. Next, Vice Censor-in-Chief Lu, when governing Yue, learned of it and assisted in repairing and completing it. In three years a great cloister grew abundantly, and in five years Buddhist affairs flourished. Jiran constantly spoke of the essential points of the mind to the dhyāna companions who came and went, and later he ended his days at the mountain cloister. In the seventh year of the Dahe era, when Bai Letian (Bai Juyi) was in Henan defending the peace, he composed a record of it, and Liu Yuxi, Adviser to the Heir Apparent, wrote it out.
