Śramaṇa Haiyun was of unknown clan and native place. He came to visit the sacred traces, and initially chose a sheer, precipitous peak and a secluded, remote forest valley beside the Southern Terrace to dwell alone. In his bitter asceticism and delight in the Dao, his frugality was difficult to emulate. Those who followed him were few, without a crowd. When he entered extinction, his disciple Shoujie sifted his śarīra and erected a stūpa. In ancient tradition, it was said that Yun was an earthly manifestation of the Bodhisattva Samantabhadra. His disciple Shoujie was the son of Gao Lishi; he followed his master in ascetic frugality, advancing without retreat. Yun instructed him, saying: "In the imperial capital there is Chan Master Wolun; though he lives in obscurity, he truly propagates the seal of the Sixth Patriarch, which is difficult for people of the time to fathom. His manner of conversion and guidance is like the shrike nourishing its seven young equally. Hurry and go follow him." When he met Lun, after only a short inquiry, [Lun] told him, "Your master Haiyun has already entered extinction." Hearing these words, Jie felt bitter grief, and rushed back, finding it just as had been said. He then stepped into his master's shoes and followed his traces, and his flourishing conversion flourished continuously. When he was about to manifest extinction, sorrowful clouds gathered thick, and ghosts and spirits wailed in grief; a stūpa for him remains.
