Whenever Hong inspected mountains and plains, he drew diagrams and shapes. He once said from the east of Luoyang to Zhang Yue: 'To the left of the Que Gate road there is a fine mountain ridge; the Chancellor may use it.' Yue said: 'I have already reached the pinnacle of subjecthood; what good fortune could surpass this?' Hong said: 'No one can surpass this.' He then consulted Censor Yuan Qianyao, who said: 'My late father left instructions.' Later Qianyao requested leave to rebury his parents in the eastern capital and returned, after a year had passed. When Hong passed Que Gate again, the ground had already become a grave mound. He asked the local residents, who said: 'These are the pines and cypresses of the Yuan family.' Hong said: 'By unseen destiny it ought to belong to the Yuan family; one can sit and wait for the transformation to unfold.' Within a few years, Qianyao was indeed promoted to high office.
