Shi Huanxi; it is not known where he was from. His nature was unconstrained, kind, forbearing, and accommodating; people never saw anger on his face, hence they gave him this name [‘Joy’]. Observing the glory of the realm, he arrived at the capital; when nobles and commoners invited him, he rarely refused. His speech was erratic and his actions difficult to fathom. Emperor Dezong heard of him and esteemed him. In the twelfth year of Zhenyuan, an imperial decree ordered Yongtai Temple to set up an ordination platform to ordain monks; at that time Xi and Baotang Chanzong were given a special decree to receive the precepts, which the monastic ranks considered an honor. On the nineteenth day of the sixth month of that year, he passed away at his home temple.
