There was Shi Wuce of Yunmen Temple in Kuaiji, a foreigner, about whom it is not known whether he was born north or south of the Congling Mountains. Was he Hu or was he Indian? How could one distinguish? During the Jianzhong era he crossed the desert and traveled east, stopping wherever he found satisfaction to pass the winters and summers. Later he lodged at Yunmen Temple by the Yue River to cultivate the Way. Because he was skilled at discerning human thoughts, he was called the Indian Monk of Sharp Wisdom. Tradition had it that he was the later rebirth of Master Kang Baoyue, a fact which must have been verified through real events. Whenever he met with renowned and virtuous masters, he would converse with them through the entire night. Jiaoran of Wuxing wrote on the wall of Wuce's room: / 'Among the ten thousand peaks of Yue, Yunmen stands unsurpassed; / The Western monk of ancient mien is named Yue once again. / In the clear dawn he sweeps the rocks, returning from walking the Way; / Beneath the forest he sleeps in dhyāna, watching the pine snow.' / The description of his lofty and transcendent character is found in Master Zhou's verse.
