初則四句：一、譯字不譯音，即「陀羅尼」是；二、譯音不譯字，如佛胸前「卍」字是；三、音字俱譯，即諸經律中純華言是；四、音字俱不譯，如經題上、二字是。第二、胡語梵言者。一、在五天竺，純梵語。

The first precedent consists of four propositions: first, translating the characters without translating the sounds, which refers to "dhāraṇī"; second, translating the sounds without translating the characters, such as the "svastika" character on the Buddha's chest; third, translating both sounds and characters, which refers to the pure Chinese found in the various scriptures and vinaya texts; fourth, translating neither the sounds nor the characters, such as the two characters at the head of a scripture title. The second precedent is "Hu languages vs. Sanskrit words": first, in the Five Indies, it is purely Sanskrit.
