In the twentieth year, he requested to return to the Western Regions, but an imperial edict graciously denied permission. On the seventh day of the tenth month in the twenty-third year, yihai, lying on his right side with feet resting one upon the other, he suddenly passed away at the age of ninety-nine, with a saṅgha age of eighty. His Dharma companions were desolate, and the imperial heart was shaken with grief; he was posthumously granted the title of Chief Minister of the Court of State Ceremonial. The Vice Minister of State Ceremonial Li Xian was dispatched to furnish the regalia, and Vinaya Master Bin was appointed to oversee the funeral affairs. On the third day of the tenth month in the twenty-eighth year, he was buried in the courtyard of Guanghua Temple on the Western Mountain of Longmen. Perfumed by samādhi and prajñā, his whole body did not decay. On the day of the funeral, the entire capital wept tears and ran with mucus, and the mountains and rivers changed color. His monastic and lay disciples, Dhyāna Master Baowei and Dhyāna Master Mingwei—belonging to the Zheng clan of Xingyang and the Wang clan of Langya—grieved that they had no one to look up to, as if they had lost their own father and mother. At the beginning of the Qianyuan era, when the Tang ethos was revived, the two Dhyāna Masters carved gāthās, and various faithful laid out a shrine; disciples built huts alongside it, akin to the devotion at Confucius's tomb.
