Later he lived in seclusion on Mount Tai for four autumns. When he was about to head to Luoyang, the Li house was in chaotic decline, and the laws governing the clergy were severe; monks without traveling companions were not permitted to journey abroad. Thereupon, leaning on his staff, he left the mountain, proceeding alone into the distance; fearing he might violate the penal laws, he mindfully reflected on Avalokiteśvara. In a short while, a monk suddenly arrived, with pure white hair, who asked to travel along with him. When they reached the Bronze Streets and arrived at the monastic precincts, in the twinkling of an eye, the monk was nowhere to be found. All said this was the power of the Sugata, manifesting in response to sincere devotion. Before long, Daoyin went to the three regions of Shu to avoid troubles, residing at Duobao Temple. Enthusiastic devotees had long heard of his renown in the Way, and thus invited him to open lectures on the *Mahāyānasaṃgraha* and the *Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa*, with listeners numbering in the thousands.
