When he received the full precepts, he immediately studied the rules of the vinaya, and moreover learned the *Mahāyānasaṃgraha* from Dharma Master Song in Pengcheng. Master Song had splendid virtue and profound ideals, fragrant as an orchid and radiant as the moon; his disciples and companions followed one after another like swimming ducks, filling the lecture hall and discussion seats to overflowing. Thereupon, in accordance with the disciplinary codes, he instituted restrictions: young śramaṇas were first made to study the vinaya, and only those who understood the *Four-Part Vinaya* (*Dharmaguptaka-vinaya*) were permitted to enter and listen. Although Daoyin was young in monastic age, his scholarship and conduct were eminent; among the assembly he alone was exceptionally deferred to and respected, and whenever Master Song expounded the *Mahāyānasaṃgraha*, he would have Daoyin repeat the lecture.
