Shi Huizhi’s father was an Indian of the Brahmin caste who had traveled to this region as an envoy, during which Zhi was born. Diligent and focused from his youth, Zhi possessed the aspiration to leave worldly life. During the reign of the Heavenly Emperor, following an elder Brahmin monk, he was ordained as a disciple by imperial decree. Having been of Indian descent, he was well versed in Indian script and language; having been born in the Tang state, he was also proficient in the speech and sounds of this land. Whenever the Tripiṭaka masters Divākara, Devajñāna, and Ratnacinta carried out translations, they always summoned Zhi to verify [the texts] and also had him translate the spoken words. Later, in the guisi year, the second year of the Changshou era [693], Zhi himself translated one fascicle of the Praise of Avalokiteśvara at the Foshouji Temple in the Eastern Capital. Where he passed away is unknown.
