Shi Fuqiu was surnamed Zhang and was a native of Taiyuan. He possessed an outstanding, extraordinary appearance, and his wisdom and comprehension were matchless. He attained exceptional mastery of the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra, broadly surveyed various texts, and distinguished refined language from common parlance. Scholars from all four directions vied to come to his gate. Yet he was slow to expound and dissect, but swift in thorough comprehension, concealing his depth as though empty, so that the mediocre masses were largely unaware of it. At that time, Master Zhe was revealing his prominence, and those of wide learning and strong memory feared clashing with him—how much more so the others! Zhe, however, was spiritually awed by Qiu's doctrinal learning, and therefore called him the "Ocean of Dharma." He lived to be over seventy, and passed away at his residence; yet it has not been heard that he left any writings.
