Shi Huiqing was a native of Guangling. He went forth from the household life when young, stayed at Mount Lu Temple, and had learning that penetrated the scriptures and vinaya, possessing pure moral conduct. He recited the Lotus Sūtra, the Daśabhūmika, and other texts. Whenever he chanted and recited at night, he would always hear the sound of snapping fingers and praise in the dark, saying: 'You chant and recite the Lotus; / We give rise to deep joy. / You are certain to achieve the Buddha path; / We pray only that your recitation does not cease.' Once at Xiaolei he encountered wind and waves, and the boat was about to capsize; Huiqing simply recited the Lotus Sūtra without ceasing, and felt the boat amid the waves as if someone were towing it, arriving at the shore in an instant. Thereupon he applied himself with even greater diligence. He passed away at the end of the Yuanjia reign-period of the Song at sixty-two years of age. An extraordinary fragrance filled the room, and delicate music was heard in the sky; people all said that by the meritorious power of reciting the sūtra he attained welcoming into the Pure Land.
