Shengchang of the Song dynasty was a native of Qiantang. He went forth into the monastic life at the age of seven. During the Chunhua era, he resided at South Zhaoqing. Longing for the noble style of Mount Lu, he pricked himself for blood to write out the 'Pure Conduct Chapter' of the Avataṃsaka Sūtra, changing the name of the Lotus Society to the Pure Conduct Society. The scholar-officials who joined the society were called disciples of pure conduct, with Duke Wang Wenzheng as their head. At that time, there were one hundred and twenty high officials and regional governors, and one thousand bhikṣus. Academician Su Yijian wrote a preface to the 'Pure Conduct Chapter,' going so far as to say: 'I ought to spread my hair to receive his feet, and cut open my body to request his Dharma, without even refusing such sacrifices; how much less could I begrudge my humble writing and shallow learning?' On the twelfth day of the first month of the fourth year of the Tianxi era, he sat upright in buddhamanasikāra. After a short while, he cried out in a loud voice: 'The Buddha has come!' and serenely passed away.
