Ruoyu of the Song resided at Xiantan in Yunchuan. He built an Amitāyus Pavilion and exhorted monastics and laity to practice buddhamanasikāra, persevering diligently for thirty years. He was friends with the two masters Daoqian and Zezhang. Qian was skilled in poetry and close to renown; Yu and Zhang focused solely on actual practice. When [Ruoyu] was about to pass away, he dreamed of a divine being who told him: "Your fellow student Zezhang attained the samādhi of the vow of Samantabhadra's conduct and has already been reborn in the Pure Land; he is currently waiting for you." Yu thereupon bathed, changed his clothes, and ordered the assembly to recite the Guan jing. Sitting upright in silence, he suddenly said: "The Pure Land appears before me; I must depart!" He wrote verses and transformed. The verses said: / "Originally, from the start, there is no home to which one can return; / A path beside the clouds—who is permitted to know it? / The stream's light casts down the setting moon over the western mountain; / This is precisely the moment when the dream at Xiantan ends." / He also said: / "In the sky, a netted canopy of a thousand flowers; / In a dream, the seven-jeweled lotus pond. / Treading securely upon the path to the Western Direction, / Not a single speck of doubt remains."
